I have used this strategy many times and I don't know why people don't use it more often. Here is how it works: you design and code a wordpress theme and distribute it to as many theme directories that you can find. On the bottom of theme you place links back to your site/s. Every time someone download your theme and install it, you get a free link. If you don't know how to design a wordpress theme, just find someone who does know how to do it. You can get a freelancer to do it for $30-$60. Or, you can sponsre a theme. You don't need to design and distribute the theme, you pay someone else to add your link on a new theme. I had a domain with no content (only one page) that got PR4 using this strategy, so it help. Moreover, if you design a theme that is relevant to your niche, most chances are that the webmaster who uses your theme, will use it on a relevant site. If you think it's too complicated, don't do it but you are missing a great opportunity to gain free backlinks. BTW - I actually made some good money selling sponsored themes. I sold three links and saved one for me. Made about $100-$150 for each theme and it took me only 1 hour to create That's it, go and get some backlinks.
PR4 is well and good. But did your traffic actually increase? Did your search engine ranking actually increase for your target keyword?
That is critically important in my view. Links with poor anchor text on irrelevant sites are pretty much worthless. So IMO, build a relevant theme or don't even bother.
its not all about PR, its all about sales or ROI PR won't give you that, get traffic and convert to sale...
Footer links are practically invisible. You don't think Google and others reduce the weight of a footer ink? It's common sense really
Yeah, i know and did this method long time ago. But my link will only stay for 1-2 weeks, after that they all remove it. Do you think they will actually let your link sit at the footer of their page if it is a nice theme? No they only want to keep it for them-self and delete our hardwork. Damn
You will get links based on quantity and not quality. It is good if you use this strategy combined with another way in getting links and not solely rely on this. Again the age of link does matter and most of link in Wordpress theme won't last long. Most of wordpress theme user are webmasters and they know the way to remove footer link even if it has been encrypted.
I do use this technique and sponsor themes time to time. It gives me a good link diversification, even though some bloggers will delete your link. If you look around you will see that many blogs keep the footer links.
Yes, I agree. If you are using someone else's stuff, they deserve a credit for it. But using this just as a link building tool is not a good practice. Do you think Google pays same weight to footer links as it does to contextual text based links? But yes, I have see the method to work and some good theme providers have a great PR and large number of back links on Google just because of footer links.
Now a days maximum webmaster removes that link and put their own. You will be get wondered that after releasing your theme, many coders will nullify it and re-distrbute it through many blackhat sites where people can get paid theme too for free.
