Good evening all, I'm new to web design and am having a lot of fun playing around with Dreamweaver and learning new things i am almost to the point of adding content and have be learning as i go by asking questions and google searching up to this point. Now i'm kind of stuck, its just a question really to see if i'm doing it right. Ok i am basically creating a joke website and i want each individual category and each individual joke to be on its own page. I have made new pages for each category of different joke and have 26 pages. Now if i want to do that with each joke i will eventually have 1000+ plus. Is this the right way of doing things? will a webhost be able to handle that amount? Also i have been creating new pages by copying and pasting from my index template then adding on it from there, is this also correct? Thank you to anyone that replies i really appriciate it
For such a simple, basic idea, why don't you use a CMS, such as WordPress? It'll provide categories which you create once (and delete once, too) - you then create a new post, and it puts the latest posts on the homepage, and creates a single page for each joke (and allows users to comment on them, if required).
Ok that sounds perfect but fancy giving me an idiots guide through dreamweaver to set this up? Sorry Thank you!
1k for a web page is more than fantastic. However, add script files, images, etc, and you'll be well above 100k at least, unless of course you don't use graphics at all. Who are you currently hosting your site with? Do they have any inbuilt software - 'one click' type software, such as Fantastico?
Hello again and thanks for replying I aint hosting it at all yet ive just been making the page totally through dreamweaver. I will be keeping images to a minimum but will be creating a joke for each individual joke. So will i be able to do CMS offline through dreamweaver? If not i dont mind doing it manually creating each page seperatly as its quite easy and fast anyway. The whole page is created through html at the moment but i would like to add a comments and rating bar on each joke and i'd be really happy. Is this possible through html? Cheers for your help spider man
No problem Honestly, you're making life 10 times harder on yourself. There are plugins available for WordPress that allow users to 'vote' for a post, and, optionally, you can display the 'top rated' posts (ie. jokes). Very simple to do and controlled by yourself through a user-friendly control panel. Unfortunately, as it may seem, WordPress is entirely online and displays your site according to the theme selected (or added, if you wish), and controlled through the use of php/mysql database. This may sound complex, but, if a 17 year old girl can do it and make $XX,XXX a month from displaying ads on her blog - then there's no reason to suggest why you can't too
He didn't mean 1k of bytes - he meant 1,000 separate pages. At which point SOME form of SSI/CGI is in order to separate the elements that are the same on every page out of each page's content, so when you make changes that appear on every page, you don't have to edit all one-thousand files. With a thousand of them - I'd be tempted to start looking at mySQL or some other database to store the data and give more sorting options.
It'd be something as simple as php in this case. Creating over 1000 pages is normal, perhaps a little excessive, as I can't see Google taking a major liking to all the one-liner jokes. I'd be tempted, in this case, to categorise your site, pages about, for example, animal jokes, blonde jokes, computer jokes, elephant jokes, etc, etc. Thus, your pages would have much more content for Search Engines to care about. And make sure it's unique content too - but, from IME, comedy nowadays seems to be derived from article re-writing software
"Why is it 90%+ of the problem posts start out "I'm designing in Dreamweaver" " - Love the siggy! My site is catagorised just like you said as i have the template already linked. I was going to make a page for each individual joke but im starting to sway a bit from that unless wordpress can change that for me. I think i'll get setup with a host and domain name soon so i can play around with it.
Uhm... PHP is a SSI/CGI (depending on installation it can be set up as EITHER).. Yer batting zero here buddy. I say, I say, that's a joke son. Boy's 'bout as sharp as a bowling ball.
Sad part is, I had to wiki that... Brit Soap I never heard of. Apparantly he stole his shtick from the same source as I - Foghorn Leghorn... Though since Foggy got it from the radio character Senator Claghorn... Good comedy never dies, it just gets ripped off by a new generation.
