If editors got paid DMOZ would look like Croatian judicial system, we got more judges per people then UK but backlog of cases so long we could probably make a six lanes paper bridge to US strong enough to support traffic!
Finally, we know the weakness in Ivan's evil plan for world domination. A paper bridge! I'll be waiting with a box of matches.... bwahahaha
If someone volunteers for the Red Cross one day a month, do you think they are lazy if they do not do two days a month? Why do you think a volunteer DMOZ editor who might only add one site a week lazy, if they don't do two a week? BTW - have you volunteered to help? or are you just demanding that other volunteers meet your expectations?
I couldn't agree with Annie any more. Until they invent internet access through sun glasses and you can move the mouse with mind control, I can't think of any other way to edit except sitting on my ever growing lazy be-hind!
I guess the main problem with DMOZ is that it completely lacks quality control. Some categories are without editors and you will never ever get listed. It will take years until the next crash (probably the database of unedited sites became too big ) when those sites are wiped out of the database. Other categories have editors who have a personal agenda and yet other categories have good editors who even accept submissions. Overall those leaderless categories can be there forever, without anyone looking at them (probably because you need to surrender your websites, your social security number, your W2 and do a lie detector test to be considered as an applicant and high level editors have more important things to do, like kicking other editors out, denying applications and looking for reasons to ban while a thorough background check on editors is performed). Those are all important things that need to be done. Of course DMOZ can't let people become editors who forgot to mention a website they had registered a long time ago. Those things need to be checked and re-checked, Databases need to be queried until the reason for denying applications is found. Don't bother them with submissions. They have no time for that. Well, there is a lot of cynicism in my post. I have learned that they are lots of good editors as well. I just don't agree with the way DMOZ is run, so that so many orphaned categories exist in the first place. Edit: I find it quite funny, while so many people here are defending DMOZ, those orphan categories have spawned quite a market for domain sellers. Just last week I saw a post of someone selling domains that are listed in DMOZ and are expired while obviously DMOZ hadn't noticed it, some guy probably just wrote a little script going through DMOZ and finding those domains. No matter what you do on that domain (put up some Adult), it won't get removed if you find the right (editorless) category. Its ironic.
That is your lack of imagination. I have laid flat on my stomach while surfing on a laptop and laid on my back while having the laptop on my stomach, heck I have surfed on a PDA while walking. Each of those positions work just fine for editing DMOZ.
Thats factually incorrect - NO category is without an editor. Again, not true. You need to do your homework before making such claims. Given that DMOZ is not a submission processing service, what is actually wrong with not processing submissions? Plenty of other directories provide that service. You really do have a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of DMOZ (and its NOT to serve webmaster's needs and wants)
There is Quality Control - not sure where the "Completle Lacks" part is coming from. For eg, I added 2 entries which I thought were ok once but a Meta Editor picked it up as not being ok. Note that this category was a relatively small one so it was an excellent pick-up. Anyways, this is part of what the meta-Editor told me - This was a day after I had entered the entries. There definately is Quality Control in DMOZ, and the above type feedback also helps Editors rectify their mistakes and learn from it for future submissions.
It is funny how people are happy to bitch about the quality of sites in DMOZ that they expect volunteers to fix, but at the same time are not prepared to volunteer to help with - they do not have to be an editor to do that ---any one can simply submit an update url for any sites that appear to be listed and should no be...
Very nice response will have to give those positions a try . . . ANNIEEEE! Also you have a very nice site, and I hope you don't mind but I listed it in my directory. We're always looking for good content and your site fit that bill. I know it's not DMOZ (yet ) but it's growing fairly well. DAVE
On the contrary, problem is too much quality control, I submit my personal website when applying for another category and its description passes meta approval, here comes editall and delists it claiming hype! When I add bunch of websites over night next day I see meta come after me and removed anything in description that could even remotely sound like hype and delisted website which looked odd to someone not familiar with topic. Basically DMOZ is being ruined by hype-spam-seo paranoia since Spanish inquisition is running around burning anyone they can get there hands on (especially when faced with language they don't have a single clue) instead of doing the work they are suppose - helping things run as smoothly as possible - as it was said this is a volunteer project so if you keep attacking volunteers instead of helping them they will work less and less until they leave. This is a breach of communications guidelines and now you will be removed.
Compostannie,I submitted too my site in Dmoz and it was accepted in almost 20 days, and it was the 15th of my category. The editor must have been a very good person,I guess.
You mean you were too lazy to read the information on DMOZ that clearly informs you how to do this? Have you considered that perhaps you are also too lazy to read how to make a correct submission? Ah! It's becoming clearer now. You are pissed off at not being allowed to put your advertising blurb in the site description. Can I suggest that if you want to advertise your site using spam and superlatives you look elsewhere and consider paying for it?
You must be one of senior editor since you considered any webmaster a spammer. Actually if you check my website description meta tag with DMOZ descriptions you will find remarkable similarities http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=vojska.net, most submissions of my little 2000 pages multilanguage website got listed with minimal modifications to descriptions. I have no need for spam or superlatives since I cover distinct topics and have almost no direct competition except thieves at wikipedia which steal content from my websites.
Thanks Dave, that is highly appreciated. I guess you are one of the few to understand my sense of humor. My ranting is to be taken with a grain of salt. I like making fun of things rather then being totally uptight about it Oh, I am on my back writing this right now Very comfortable, legs angled and laptop on legs.
you could IF you decide to change the location ( city ) or start putting affiliate links on some pages and then DMOZ will think your site is spammy. how do I know..? from experience...they took mine out because of address and city change of business and in the process I lost around 600 backlinks. I have snapshot of backlinks in early 06' and then in early 07'...as a result a pagerank drop. not all bad though..G & Y SERP's are still high
