Hey guys, I submitted my new site into DMOZ less than 3 weeks ago. From what I have seen and read, it takes people weeks and months and years. Yet, there it is...listed already. Is this good? This is actually the first one that listed so fast. How long does it normally take?
If the category has an active Editor, I see no reason why a submitted site cannot be indexed that fast. The speed also depends on the number of submissions that category gets.
Half the sites that get listed were never submitted in the first place. I have listed sites within minutes of them being submitted (I was on my editors control panel when the submission arrived); others I have left for years in the pile as the submitted title and description say to me "I can't be bothered with this one".
Well, I'm pretty happy about it considering the amount of people that say it takes forever. This is actually the first site that is mine, and not a clients to get listed. Can I screw it up in any way?
This is very much dependent on the category and the editor(s) involved. I am an editor for a small category, which I check on a weekly basis. Submissions to this category seldom take any more than a week to be processed. If you submit to a popular category or one with no editor you could wait a year.
It's not all that unusual at all. What's unusual is for someone to come and post that it happened. Usually only the disgruntled post. Thank you for that.
I have never seen a single post of gratitude from any one of the 1000's that get listed each month that were never submitted in the first place.
You mean like 99% of websites I have listed while being editor? Well those people don't even know what DMOZ is in the first place and don't even care about and since traffic received from DMOZ is almost non-existent they'll hardly feel any changes so why would they feel the need to thank someone? Having website listed at DMOZ is of little use if editor isn't also doing promotion of those categories around.
I agree totally that webmasters should feel that way ....buts its kind of paradoxical that so many bitch here about not being listed ....don't figure.
Because there is submissions for on DMOZ which is of little use to anyone? It should probably be disable for at lest two thirds of DMOZ which get spammed or receive only junk and leave it open only to small niches without active editor, that way only quality websites should get through submissions which could be then quickly handled - although word quick at DMOZ is used only for Kill 'em all, God will know his own removals .
Hmm... I see DMOZ editors have finally got off their lazy be-hinds and are actually doing something for a change....
Lazy? Some people just don't get it. The people who do this, myself included do it for nothing and most of them have other priorities. Since you are so full of energy why don't you volunteer to become an editor yourself?
How incredibly clueless of you to say that. Editors have real lives just like anyone else. Since DMOZ doesn't pay it's editors we do it as a hobby while relaxing, the point being that DMOZ editors edit while they are sitting on their lazy behinds, not while they're supposed to be taking care of real life responsibilities, working a job, and spending quality time with our families. I think what your real issue is, is that DMOZ editors don't spend enough time on their lazy behinds killing time editing. Btw, what do you do to occupy your time while you're sitting on your lazy behind (we all have one)? Watch TV perhaps? Party with your friends? Not that there would be anything wrong with that, but come on, cut us a break, DMOZ editors can't spend too much time on our lazy behinds editing or we'd loose our jobs and not be able to pay for our Internet....now how would that increase the amount of time we spend editing or the number of submissions that get reviewed??
