That's a complete cop out. Great content is only one part of a large equation.

I'm only just starting out on the road of link building - but signing up to forums like this seems to really assist in getting Google to know about you.

I've been submitting to loads of directories too. bttradespace has been a really good free site that has given my site (homecontrast.com) quite a good set of links.

You need to pursue not quantity but quality of the links you get. They should be from a site related in topic to yours and ideally one way. Such a link will most probably be valued a lot by Google

    Probably, or will?

There are actually two ways to do it. You can go for quality and just a few dozen good websites linking to you will probably do it. Or you can go for quantity, and probably achieve the same results. The problem is when you're in a very competitive field, there's only so much quality you can get. When your average competitor has over 20,000 incoming links and is a PR6 or above. The whole quality versus quantity argument goes out the window.

At that point, you have to just go for mass. I'm currently working with a client, and have a long term plan to get over 100,000 incoming links over a year. Not going to be easy, but in a field that gets over 20,000 searches a day, the payoff is huge.

But for 90% of websites, quality will get you there. Just realize the upper 10% are going to require quantity as well.

It's better that you have quality backlinks. PR is not only calculated by number of backlinks but quality of backlinks.
