Before you do any directory listing, I would suggest to watch this video from last month on link building/link earning by Rand Fishkin: seomoz.org/blog/the-death-of-link-building-and-the-rebirth-of-link-earning-whiteboard-friday
That article is years old. It's no longer relevant. All the pageranks are wrong. Also e.g. LII doesn't exist anymore. It merged with IPL.org and they no longer accept submissions. It's also missing some very strong directories... I think people are missing the point, and Rand has never really been up to speed on directories, he's even been silenced (pardon the pun - it wasn't me that did it) on Digitalpoint over his lack of directory knowledge. Curated lists are highly valuable to be listed on because they are short lists. e.g. If we are talking about the top thai restaurants in NY City. Let's say there are 50-100 restaurants, and only 5-10 are listed. Naturally if you are one of those 5-10 it's a very valuable listing. Not just for traffic purposes, but also in terms of a recommendation. Directories still hold value, when they do not act like a link farm. Let's be clear... very few don't act like a link farm. This isn't news. It's not something that people need to wake up to. It's been around since the birth of the industry, people have just chosen to ignore it. To be a real directory YOU MUST EDIT. If all a directory is doing is taking submissions and displaying them in categories, it's just a sophisticated link farm. Google is up to date on these. If people think that their algorithm cannot look at two directories with different designs, but the same category dumps and similar styles of listings, and decide they aren't valuable... they are kidding themselves. It's easy to look at patterns of weakness in directories and dismiss them. I can do the flower test and knock out 90% of directories as spam without any further investigation. If I can do that with a simple search, you can bet that Googles algo can do the same thing, and does.
