Isn't better to just stick to known and popular hostings? The issue I have with cheap hostings is that they tend to have a very large percentage of spammers and black hat seo which can cause your sites to be de-indexed with google!
I have used a company out of Austin Tx called Codero for over a year. The price is great, the customer service is US based. They have some huge accounts such as Delta airlines and American Express. I know a few people that are using them and they love them as well. Hope this helps.
Popular doesn't necessarily mean good... and you have to ask WHY they are known. GoDaddy, Network Solutions, Rackspace -- very popular and making a fortune, but they're sleazeball ****'s overcharging and basically taking advantage of ignorant fools. That should only be an issue if you are on shared hosting, though if you end up with a new site at an IP address formerly used by a spammer that can rear it's ugly head -- laughably the more "known" the host, the more likely that is to happen. Now that said... My "needs" in a server differ from most -- I usually just want a place to bring up my OS of choice (typically debian) JUST to the point I can SSH or KVM into it. EVERYTHING else I want to handle my damned self because I have trust issues with "managed servers", and have wildly different opinions on values for my php.ini, my.conf and httpd.conf than what others do. I don't want no stupid "panel" crap getting in the damned way of me setting things, and in the handful of cases where I'm working with some halfwit who can't manage a .conf file, ISPConfig would be overkill as panels go. I sure as **** don't trust any host or even panel on a host to do things like install CMS or forum software given some of the CRAP I've seen shoveled into them under the hood that is NOT part of a fresh default install. As such a dedicated host or VPS is about all I want and/or need. Right now I've got a few VPS accounts with a company called AfterBurst. http://afterburst.com/ The laugh being their cheapest VPS are faster than what I was paying for a dedicated server a decade ago. Their openVZ plans: http://afterburst.com/unmetered-vps Being best of the lot IMHO. A bit pricey right now, you watch close and they'll occasionally slash prices 50% across the board on these. I'm paying $7.50/mo right now for what's currently somewhere between their $15 and $20 plan. (I'm on 4 cores with 2 gigs RAM and 160 disk space -- plans change over time). As with anything, watch for specials. Two years in and I've not a single complaint with them. For what most people are paying for a normal traffic website, their $10/mo OpenVZ plan is overkill. The only reason for a website to need more than their most expensive plan is massive DB's or insane amounts of user uploads -- that's when you offload to a cloud type service. ... or at least, the only reason if it's well coded and not wasting hundreds of K of HTML and megabytes of scripttardery on delivering 5 to 10k of plaintext.
If I were to suggest a Host, Being a provider myself I would recommend using, The Following Compaies for Services. I recommend them because I use or have used them in the past year without issue. I would not suggest using a large company like @deathshadow said before this is due to the fact that they overcharge, usually have poor customer service, and worry more about the bottom line than anything else. The Company That I see who does this and hides behind a veil of companies is EIG Or Endurance Intenational Group. They own Arvixe, HostGator, BlueHost, and many many more. 1. For Dedicated Servers, I recommend Server Complete. They are a smaller Company based in Jacksonville Florida. If you want a Managed Server I recommend HostDime. 2. For VPS Servers I recommend BuyVM They offer a reliable reasonably priced Service. 3. For Reseller Accounts I recommend Crocweb. They are Reliable, Reasonably priced and the support is great. 5. For Shared Hosting I would Recommend Either Crocweb, or HostwithLove. The difference is Crocweb is based in Canada and does not offer multiple locations like HostwithLove.
I would add Atlantic.net to this list as well. They used to do a one dollar plan, but now start at $5 a month for cloud VPS with a variety of services offered. If you don't want cloud, I would take a look at Future Hosting for affordable VPS plans.
