liquid means that the website stretches to the visitors resolution setting.
for example column 1 takes up 20% of the width of the screen and column 2 takes up 80%. If a visitor shows up to your site with their resolution set to 800x600 then the first column would be 160px wide on their screen. if another visitor shows up with the res set to 1024x768 the first column would be 205px wide. Or if a visitor resizes the window the columns will stretch to fit the available space.

fixed means the widths are set. column 1 is a set width and column 2 is a set width regardless of visitors resolution settings.

liquid works fine on larger resolutions if you set your fonts with em tags instead of fixed sizes.

Well, if it's liquid, if you resize the browser, it will keep fitting. If it's solid, it won't fit anymore. A liquid site is better but harder to create.
