Learning Linux isn’t easy, but it’s getting easier all the time, and as more people make the switch to avoid being roped into Windows Vista, it can only get better. Our business switched to Ubuntu Linux on the workstations half a year ago, and we are very happy with it. On the servers we are using CentOS.
its a baseless argument, dont know who are these people comparing vista to a linux? Its not even close to dos or windows 3.11. I have tried most of the distros since a decade and I believe the intial releases (late 90's) were much better then the present generation Linux. Every new releases of Linux has elements derived from popular OS's, thats called plagiarism. linux is still light years away from Windows 95, even installing a small app is such a pain in the ass. the file names are a mystery in itself as if life was less complicated. in windows the names can easily be linked to its function its so user friendly. if you are stuck with something then u have no one to yell to but yourself 'coz noone's taking responsibility. most think linux is safe & secured well when the thief has both the keys & plan to your house how easy could it get to hack in? people dont mind paying to buy/upgrade latest hardwares then why bother for few hundred more for the OS that actually enables your PC's fullest potential. linux will always play the catching up game. even MAC is far better than linux.
If linux is less able than the earliest windows versions (which I disagree greatly) then could you please explain to me why some major companies use SUN operating systems (which is free and operates on UNIX language)? Also explain why almost all servers you see today will be based on linux because of its ability to adapt to any situation, and linux's ability to network much easier than windows could be, ESPECIALLY vista.
Windows is for the layman, Linux is for the linuxpert! But mind you, is becoming much easier to use for all.
I just saw this on Digg could not resist to post here http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2008/02/mac-vs-pc-vs-li.html
Who would agree with this: Windows: Good with Game/Office. Moderate with design and some servers. Bad with some servers. MAC: Good with Design. Moderate with office. Bad with servers/games. Linux: Good with Servers. Moderate with Office(and games and design with some tweaks). Bad with games/design.
Based on the South Park video, Linux can run a few good 3D games under Wine. also can work Excel sheets out of the box for Free. Linux it's getting better. Just give it more time for the desktop.
No question for me its Linux. Which is wayyyyyy more secure? Linux. Which can be run on much more hardware? Linux. I'm too lazy to go on though.
Not sure what your criteria is based on, but Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows Server 2008 are extremely good server technology. Not sure why you talking about servers though, when thread was about desktop. Also, if any of the Linux advocates could reply to my earlier post (last post on page 5) about Linux desktops in the workplace and being compliance friendly, it would be a better discussion then the "Linux is best" or "vista is best" posts.
aren’t these same people complaining who started their journey in to the magical world of computing with windows?? people grow up! its human tendency to support the weak. initially even I was in favor but as an intellect couldn’t ignore th facts, just ask yourself as to in what ways can linux (with its limited functionality) make your life easy much less productive. entertainment - no (no proper support for dolby & 5.1) games – no office applications are jus a clone of microsoft office customer support - no user friendliness - no (windows despite its complexities its so easy to navigate) third party applications - way way less than wts in store for windows Be practical as for servers i dont see any point why anybody has to settle for linux when there is far better technology out there which offers wide acceptibility and realibility for any business establishments. and for someone overhere calling me noobo well fyi i have used beos, redhat, ubuntu, fedora, suse, mandirva, novell, tiger/leopard & almost all of microsoft os uhh i guess u r list isnt this big! because of nature of moore's law, anything that an extremely clever programmer can do at one point can be replicated by a merely competent programmer some numbers of years later.
