Linux hosting or Windows Hosting?

Im currenlty using window hosting with godaddy and the application for it to run my website and forums + blogs are horrible. DNN has its restrictions and wont let me install properly into root. Community Server is too confusing cause i got no clue how to edit the contents (help here?).

Now that windows hosting has failed me completely. I am going to call godaddy and ask for a transfer to linux hosting with php at no charge cause im using window hosting deluxe alreay anyway, hopefully they'll let me.

Problem - My PC is windows xp sp2, do i need linux os to code for a linux hosting server? I never used linux before will this be a problem?

Goal - Website with Blog, links to personal site, many files, forums, a database for login/sign up/register etc.

you will see no difference on your end.

you can FTP into your web directory, make changes, upload files, just like you can with a Windows server.

Moving is good choice. Linux just seems to work better, IMO.

You do not need Linux on your local machine. Dreamweaver should be able to publish to a Linux platform. If not all you need is a FTP client. You can get one or more for free.

All of your html files should work fine.

If you have anything in asp you may need to convert to php.

I have a GD account so I will be happy to advise you where and when I can.

Convert to Linux and go from there. If you want to PM me your current site I will try to take a peek.

There are a lot more free to use scripts for Linux than there are for windows.

Ok i just called GD and some guy name Chet did the switch for me, very fast and smooth, i asked basically twice - 4 times making sure i have the same hosting plan stuff except the os change and php access, he said yea and now i gotta wait for the pending account change to clear.

Hopefully after this i'll be able to work on my site .

Windows to Linux conversion at godaddy is pretty painless, you wont need to upload any thing, every thing will be transfered easily.

Linux typically uses PHP for scripting and PHP can be available for Windows too. So if you are doing any dynamic contents, you can use PHP. You could install PHP on your Windows computer and once tested, you can upload it to your Linux Server with no problem at all.

    It is typically quite painless.

There is no problem to code for Linux on a Windows machine. HTML is a static language and it does not matter if you create it on a Linux or Windows PC. PHP can be run both on Linux and on Win, but Linux tends to be faster and more stable.

If you decide, you can even run a server on your Windows pc for testing purposes and develop your PHP pages right on your local machine. Later you can transfer them to the server via FTP.

My personal choice for a local web server is Abyss Web Server from http://www.aprelium.com/. The site also has a tutorial how to install PHP together with the server. You may have to install the MySQL database if the applications you are writing are database driven.

Another option is to install the XAMPP package - it automtically installs Apache web server, PHP and MySQL. The url is http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

Good luck with the coding :)

I am trying to get my hosting provider to switch my site mckeonengineering.com to linux based. The windows hosting just doesn't have as many features and costs the same. What affect should I see in the search engines? If you search for 'orlando civil engineer' on Yahoo, my site is number 4. If you search for 'orlando civil engineer land developer' on Google, my site is number 1. My wesite has only been up about 60 days.

My other site engineertrades.com is already on linux based server and I like that hosting.

    Thanks again!

The platform will not affect SE rankings in any way.

Downtime can affect things if it is protracted.
