Some of those comments are most interesting. Someone actually said that with Linux there is no need for protection software. Well.....that's not true, and there is protection software for Linux. While Linux isn't a main target, there ARE viruses that get to Linux. I promise you that if the world shifts to Linux and its many flavors over Windows, then Linux will be the main target and we'll have to fight badware just as much as we do on Windows now. And while the numbers are very few, even Mac is not totally immune. It's all money driven, and for right now Mac and Linux isn't worth it. As for the techs in the story......I agree with the majority that greed is the motive for their actions. Thanks PlanningYourTax
Can you point out a few viruses for linux and how worse they have been effected? Linux is the most powerful OS in the world. It cannot be taken for granted. And as regards to viruses for linux are concerned, I doubt it will happen.
Yes. There are two I'm aware of. The last one was five years ago, I believe. Windows does not have the same security levels and permissions required to install and run code. Even if you broke through all that, the worst you could do is mess up some user's directory somewhere but not bring down the whole system. Yes. I would much rather buy a cheap computer that's a virus magnet than pay a little more and be happy.
I don't agree with you . Windows virus spread from IE massively , but there is no such problem in linux OS . (PS. Are there any relation between your title and thread content ?)
Mac and linux don't allow programs to be installed onto your computer without requesting permission from the user so it is very hard to spread malware/viruses onto these computers where as Windows software allows programs to be installed and make changes to the registry. I will gladly pay the difference and get a Mac and be confident that I won't be spending a day trying to fix my Windows computer again.
That's stupid.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_computer_viruses It is true linux that has less hole than windows. However, no OS is prefect. There must be someway to break, if you spend long enough to look for it. Linux has such small share in home PC market since day 1 (and it is still really small compare to PC). Most of the linux user are more tech savvy than normal user so it is less likely for them to get infest from email attachment or malware download. and it is just not profitable to create virus for linux/apple compare to PC
As your own link shows, the only way to wreak significant havok is to gain root access. And you can't gain root access. A user can enable a virus by running it intentionally but, even then, the mess it could make would be minimal. So, run an OS that lets virus in freely or run an OS that always puts up a fight. Pick one.
