Links Without Anchor Text

    I have seen people, posting comments with their links on Digg. Will these links have any weight in google?

    That's a good question, since they are no follow and hve no anchor text, you would think not.

    Agreed, good question.

    The thing is, for any link that's clickable, it most likely means the URL itself is the anchor text.

    So if the URL is the anchor text, then the strength lies in the word parts of the file name itself.

    For example, if we accept that Google et al are smart enough to figure out that "_" and "-" are delimiters and that extensions like .php, .asp, .html are ignored, then:

    /how-close-are-we-to-star-trek-technology.html
    Code (markup):
    Would appear to be more valuable as ad hoc anchor text than:

    /how-close-tech.html
    Code (markup):
    But this is just an educated guess.

    However, if Digg applies the "nofollow" anchor attribute, then all best are off...
