Links vs. Content on an E commerce site?

Do you throw out the book on links vs. content when it comes to e-commerce sites? So you have a blog and you write a lot of quality content that people want to read, unique material, no spam, good solid stuff, then you build a good range of high pr and other links to the page? Right?

On an e commerce site writing a lot of good quality material is not really an option but adding products is. So do you just focus on back links when adding the new products? There is only so much time you can give to writing about sheer panties after all when you have 400 other items to add.

So I guess my question is where does on page seo and writing good quality content fit in an e-commerce site fit? Most of the top ranking e-commerce sites I see have negligible content, if at all?

It is true that many ecommerce websites neglect to focus on including plenty of content. Although this is the easier strategy, it has its downfalls. Adding lots of unique content still helps establish your website theme. Those content pages can also become landing pages for additional search engine traffic. At a minimum you should have unique product descriptions and product category descriptions. New products do count as content though. So take the time to add as many products as you need. Then worry about going back and adding more text.

Sometimes a freelance writer can save a lot of time. For quite low prices they can help you take care of any content you may need. Try elance.com or the services section of this forum.

Thanks, for a bit there I wasn't adding products as I thought new pages with so little content would look bad to google but when I survey virtually every e-commerce site around the amount of content is woefully inadequate. Some of the better ones, though do have some content. The adult toy sites put up fake reviews, maybe they are real? It is a not so clever to get more content in there that buyers may take as legitimate. When you read the reviews though you really have to wonder who wrote that stuff that sounds like employees or copywriters.

Google recently put out something talking about their formula and what gets better rank, their chief economist did the video, it was on youtube. The nutshell version is that it was/is about content, then amount one is willing to pay.

So, what that means to you is that content is king.
