Links to olddomain.com count AFTER 301 redirect?

I recently changed my domain from olddomain.com to newdomain.com as a result of a trademark issue. I've set up a 301 redirect and the rankings appear to be slowly coming over to newdomain.com. I've built up countless links to olddomain.com. With the domain change, is it correct that these will eventually "not count"? I'm asking because I'm being asked to park the domain after 1 year of having the redirect in place. I will of course lose traffic whenever someone stumbles across an old link. If my rankings transfer over and there is no link value for links to olddomain.com, than I guess it's not worth the fight to keep the forward in place past a year.

    Thoughts?
