Wiki pages are very high page rank but i'm not sure if you get all the benefit from a link from it. What do you guys think?
I didn't notice anything when I had a link in it. One of the pages related to my niche had a place for external links. Since there were already like 10 of my competitors listed there (none of whom contributed), I added a link. It lasted a couple weeks and all but 3 links were removed. It appears as though theirs a Nazi watching that section, because 3 competitors always remain while everyone else gets removed. But, once again to answer your question I did not notice any difference with it - although I'm sure it helped because like the DMOZ there are lots of scraper sites using the content.
I'm just wondering if it's written into the algo not to pass on pr. Especially as it looks as though google do have ties with wiki.
I don't see the point in not passing pr. I consider Wiki an authority of information. Authority sites should mean MORE in pr value IMO. I understand some could abuse the system to get pr, but it wouldn't have any value since any spam would be taken off in a short time, therefore not passing any pr value.
Just look whether the links have nofollow attribute or not. I think at some time they didn't and later on it was implemented, but I might be wrong, so better check. I remember getting some little traffic from a link there, for a very niche site.
Links from Wikipedia show you as an expert on the given topic. They are hard to keep and have to be of real value - a contribution that adds to the article. The benefits come in with an enhanced reputation and traffic. Depending on the topic, the traffic can be big. And Google does use Wikipedia results in the "onebox". I interviewed a Wikipedia expert a few weeks ago and posted it at SR: http://www.seorefugee.com/seoblog/2005/12/28/wikipedia-and-seo-an-interview-with-wit/
Very good article. I have quite a few links from wiki which I've had for a fairly long time so I'm chuffed
Screw PR, I get traffic from being cited in Wikipedia, and that's pretty consistent traffic, too. My citation has been in place for almost a year, and because it is actually germane and was for an article I created to replace a stub, no one has dicked around with it.
The links are not no-follow. (at least the one(s) that I've gotten on the site. And I'm getting some traffic from it, too.
I get solid traffic from Wikipedia links as well, though my links are probably more authoritative to begin with... wouldn't be surprised if it contributed to the Yahoo ranking as well.
i have links on every language page for my site subject (that's about 20 pages or more), for more than a year now (so i guess they don't consider it spam), but apart from traffic, i don't see that it got me any ranking improvement.
Initially Wikipedia had "nofollow" in all its links but later they removed it. I was reading this article the other day about having links in Wikipedia. While searching for it in google I found this on wikipwdia itself. Wikipedia:External links Though this is NOT the article I read, though it sure makes a good reading.
