Links From Supplementals

Hi - Can anyone tell me if Google counts backlinks from pages listed as supplemental results. For instance if you submit 50 identical articles to 50 article directories, 95% of these will be listed as supplemental results in Google - will the backlinks from these pages count or what? If they don't count then a hell of a lot of people are wasting a hell of a lot of time.

I would say that it helps :) Based on my experiences.. although you need to be constantly writing articles.

Google will count them in the links showed in your webmaster/sitemap tools.

In regards to if they show up when you link: search in google...the only ones that show up for me are the article directories that are directly related to the topic of my site.

I think it is an effective method of increasing your SERP.

Thanks for the comments guys - a bit mixed as I expected, I have asked this question several times in other forums and never got a reply, so maybe it is a little uncertain. When I first started writing articles, I send out identical articles to all the sites I knew about, since learning about supplementals I have changed my policy and now send different articles to each one, with varying titles and summaries. In the last week or so I have started to send different versions with totally different titles and totally different summaries, hopefully none of them will appear as supplemental - of course when they are picked up and re-published by others, the problem occurs again - even worse when re-published by people who 'forget' to include the resource box. How do you all feel about articles - are they really worth the effort - I always thought that as they were relevent to my website (title, description and content) the backlinks would be considered as valuable, but I do see many varied opinions about this.

Also, It's that "5%" that really counts, if with each article you put out you are able to get 3-5 quality sites to pick it up and promote it on thier site it would be worth the effort.
In most cases I'm happy if 1 good site picks up the article (not counting the article distribution sites)

The rest may help, but at least will not hurt your site.

I do not know the algorithm but I can think of a sort of "diminishing returns" system with duplicate link.

It is a link so it counts, but it's value is lower.

Slightly off the subject but still relevant - does anyone know the best way to counter people stealing your articles and not giving credit in the way of links. I am getting this a lot and of course there is more chance of the original material being listed as supplemental and the stolen material ending up as a genuine listing - this has happened to me although I published the article on my website long before submitting it to article directories. I have just discovered one today and have contacted the website owner but of course do not expect a reply. Some weeks ago I contacted ezinearticles.com about another incident but they said it was up to me to take action, so despite all their rules and guidelines they do nothing to counter copyright theft, so why bother to have rules in the first place - it might as well be a free for all. Also today I found another example and managed to post a comment under the article including my website address in the comment (although the address is subject to a "nofollow" so no use as a backlink) at least any readers of the article will be able to visit my site and see the original material if they wish.

To find out who is copying your website use copyscape.

I think that if the page if cached (not too often in the supp. index) the link is still valid.

The problem is that all the "directory pages" containing only links are falling in this supp index.
So reciprocal linking is of very little value nowadays.
