Linking to yourself

I've seen a few sites do this.

They write an article (eg http://www.mydomain.com/article.htm) and within the article, they link back to themselves (eg http://www.mydomain.com/article.htm)

What would be the advantage of linking back to yourself from within the same article?

I also do it so readers can find things easier if I'm referring to it specifically
