Linking to un-relevant sites is not good method ,some or other day google will penalize. Link to related content . It is good for you. Un-relevant content means your site is about somewhat and you linking to other site which is different content. Which is dam out of it.:D

You can get 1000 links from any random websites which is pretty much the same as linking to 1 which is relevant. You're better off not wasting your time and effort and find those good links, sure they might count to the lesser unknown Search Engines but who optimizes for those? With Googles Caffeine update only a few months away you can be sure that their algorithm is going to be even more strict than before and Google is the only one which counts imo.

I agree with everything said here, except for ONE point:
I've been doign tihs for years and ive never really figured out how to beat the compitetion in google (ive done it here and there, but never figured out "HEY thats how it works!")

However while attempting to do so in google, ive managed to build great success in yahoo and msn/bing, and have seen wonderful results thanks to them.

Never count out the little man.

I woudl also like to give a personal note on this: my 9-5 is as a computer tech for a local repair shop. I see dozens of new computers every day and see what people do with them (believe it or not, this helps quite alot in the IM field to see what the average users do)

and one note i -have- to make while talking abotu this, is the amount of people who have bing.com as a homepage. MSN has some great teamups with brandname computers, and a LOT of people stick with the factory settings. i would honestly say I see more yahoo/msn than i do google homepages

It's okay to have links from irrelevant sites but just don't have too many. Try getting most relevant links and a few irrelevant ones are okay.

Linking to a non-relevant site may harm your website, what I mean is, it may not help you to increase your rankings in Google or if you're linking to a adult site or casino site, that may put you to the pedestal of penalization.
