    Hello all,

How does Google look at pages/sites that link to some "site" hosted by geocities? Will it penalize the linking site in any way? The geocities page does provide good quality info.

Im taking a guess here but i would suspect it will just crawl the yahoo section and add those. I doubt very much that you actual site content will be listed as yahoo has the banner script in there.

You could always contact google and ask them.

    Best of luck

I dont think G is having any discrimaination for free hosts like geocities.
Since some of geocities sites does well in G's SERP, there wont be any problem in linking to them.

But most webmasters hate to link these free kinda sites!

May be some one who *knows well* can explain the reasons behind it.

well go to dmoz -> kids and teens -> personal homepages

there are plenty of geocities (and other free hosting sites) that have been indexed and given pr so i doubt that google puts any penalty on them at all.

It's just that pages coming from paid accounts (registered domain name) are given better credit especially by google. Y! has NOT yet followed on this step cuz geocities is yahoo owned and according to what i've observed, Y! makes no fairly no difference to free or paid domain as of now (unless you're dealing with a commercial competitive term, then it counts :->)

devbistro, to answer to your comment - NO, I don't think there's any applicable penalty to linking to a geocities page, inbound or ourbound, especially that it has a lot of content as you say
