Just read this post which seems like a load of bull. http://www.seoco.co.uk/blog/2008/08/02/more-proof-that-google-loves-digitalpointcom/ I get the part about where they think linking to DP could be bad for your site (which I think is untrue but I'm going to be cautious) but how can having links in your sig be a bad thing? Surely Google don't expect you to be able to control the sites which link to you?
How it could be harm? If you link to digitalpoint as reference sources I see no reason on any penalty. DP gain authoritative status not just because of link, but because of the participated peoples too. You should know that Google toolbars track almost everything you do with or without you permission.
If linked from DP is bad, why this forum still maintain it's PR, and still have a good ranking on google for "webmasters forum" keyphrase?
"has Google well and truly deemed DigitalPoint.com a bad neighborhood that should not be linked to?" I will write it on toilet paper, wipe my ... and flush it down the drain.
They are too many this kind of article but you gotta judge yourself based on the actual practice So far i dont see any bad effect
Getting backlinks from dp means getting quality link from a good page rank holder website...it doesn't seem harmful from any angle.
In other view, DP could be considered a "link farm" for many unrelated links on member's sig. But DP is a helpful webmaster forum, highly moderated, always have new and fresh contents, and a good authority site.
Forum sigs are not super valuable since the majority are not relevant, but I think they help in the serps. Now linking to dp that may be a diffrent story I am not sure if this would hurt website ranking.
I wanted to jump in and give my 2 cents. If you want to build the pr of a post or thread then you should do linking to it. This will benefit you if the pr of that pages increases as a result of your linking. With regards to sigs links here to your site. I have met many people that have seen their site up in the serp as a result of either renting a forum sig from a member or creating it in their post. As for me all of my sites are on the first page of Google, so I need not worry about that for the time being.
