Honestly, getting links from EDU blogs is overrated. It used to really be helpful because it was a rare thing to get a link from an edu site, but now that students can set up blogs easily and link to whever they want, it's the same as any other link.

Just getting a link from an .edu site doesn't necessarily mean it's a good backlink. However, in general, edu sites are better. Nothing a few high PR social media sites can't replace.
