I have 3 sites (1 in progress of design) that all are on a travel theme; accommodation, travel guides / news, and travel services, i.e. car hire etc. I'd like to link the accommodation site to guides site and guides site to accommodation and travel services services to both the accommodation and guides site (with me?) So basically I want to link them together - now I've heard that the search engines don't like this type of linking, is this true. What potential problems could I be causing myself by doing this type of link exchange? Darren
i linked all my sites 2geva at beginning of month and so far no probs, if anything its helped the sites grow since the sites are related so traffic from one site gets passed to my other site and visa versa
You wont get penalized for anything like that. A link is a link. The worst that could happen is the links wont be worth a bunch. But they still will be worth something.
I am also linking a lot of my own sites together - no visible problem. I don't think you need to worry if you don't exaggerate it.
aslong as their is more content to links ratio (so your sites look like sites and not directories of links) you will be fine.
Thanks folks! I'm not linking them to improve rankings or PR, but I am linking them to move traffic around, i.e. when they book accommodation, they book flight and car hire, then get some travel guidance about the destination they are visiting.. that's going to be the general idea anyway! lol
I always cross link all my sites. It should help the pr a bit and it also helps send traffic from my older sites to my new ones. Most books I've read on seo talks about the importance of cross linking sites.
Google and other search engines can see a pattern and "can" damage your site's rankings by cross-linking with other sites withink your network. Solutions: If linking for gaining PR/incoming links: have all sites on their own IP c class addresses. That will keep Google and others guessing as to what sites are your own. Use multiple hosts. If linking for traffic exchanging: put links in javascript or server side coding as to not pass PR/linking value.
I'm cross linking 20 sites. No problems. I've set up my own "network" or "webring" of sites to give visitors the option of browsing "our network of sites". Has been very effective of getting people into the site for widget x and then moving them onto widget y after sale was made - in some cases a sale of widget y leading to a sale of widget z. It's all good in my opinon
I always link my sites together, never in exactly the same way though, and I don't seem to be attracting any penalties. Info-Pack.com
