Linking from different sites - what's worth?

    I recently read from SitePro News this Article. It's states "100 links from random web sites, from industries you are not even related with, means almost nothing."

    Here's the entire article:

    What do you guys think about this? How true is this statement? When I read it, I thought about the Co-op network and the links it provides.

    The article is completely wrong.

    I think it is prudent to put energy into getting links from relevant sites because one day there may be shift in this direction.

    But, today, almost any link counts.

    I would say the huge negative I am seeing right now are sight-wide links with the same anchor text on all links... can't prove it but I have many examples where this has killed my SERPs for that KWP.

    While I haven't personally seen a problem with site-wide links with the same anchor text, I had always assumed it would be a problem, or at the very least only count a couple of them. One of the reasons the ad network was done was for that very thought of mine.

    I don't think it will hurt to have site wide links. It might not do any benefit but it definitely won't hurt rankings.
