You want to improve rankings for that keyword, so you do more link building. Of course, that's with the assumption that you KNOW the keywords are popular enough - i.e. gets you traffic when it ranks.

When the keyword brings traffic and revenue to your portal, then probably it could be a sign that you should start building links on your website through that keyword to gain more revenue, traffic and possible SERP rankings.
By the results in the SERPs (search engine results pages). If your placement in a Google search is improving, your linkbuilding is strong As per the list above: Social Bookmarking articles submission blog commenting directory submission forum posting Add: social media (twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Linkedin) You want to keep your links diverse and consistent. If you're putting good content out there, and consistently sharing it through the avenues above, you're on the right track. You also have to make sure your on-page SEO is done well - if you're a business - have a terms of service page, a privacy policy page, a billing policy page. Make sure your site is legit. There is a question above about Duplicate content: Don't worry about Duplicate content on your site. Duplicate content is a factor when Google is filtering results for page 1 of a search. So if you're not offering anything different from the other companies on pg 1, your site has a strong chance of being filtered out - especially if you're weaker in other areas (number of links, domain age, etc.) Dup content can also be a factor if the blog post or article linking to you is identical to another article / post linking somewhere else. All of the dup content questions are a non-issue if you're producing good, original content. Even if you have 3000 identical articles placed on 3000 different sites... as long as each of those articles points to you as the author, you're golden. The problems with dup content come up when you've got nothing original to say and you only plagiarize the work of others. And if you're doing that, you have bigger issues... like the risk of being sued. I hope that helps.
If you want to achieve ranking for certain keywords (which you choose), we need to have a good reputation (for our website and keywords). to have a reputation we need to have a backlinks with a anchor text. If we have many backlinks with anchor texts (keywords) from quality and high PR (page rank) site then we'll be getting our website perform well with the keywords.
You can download a free trial version of Market Samurai or SerpAttack and check in the SEO option of these tools which show the top sites and their backlink quantities. If you see many sites in the top 10 having numerous backlinks then you need to build backlinks as well. For example your keyword phrase is dog training and you check in the SEO option of these free tools. You find that 3 sites have 50, 100 and 200 backlinks respectively. Then you know that if you want to rank highly then you must have more than 200 backlinks. Of course the PR of backlinks also count so if one site has 200 PR0 or PR1 backlinks then it is much lesser than even one PR6 backlink. I've tried to explain in brief but hopefully you should have an idea by now.
I think the moment that you step in the online world, regardless of keywords you use, you need link building if you really want your site to be more visible.
