I think one of the cheapest and most effective ways to build links is through article distribution,
it will take some time to see the benefits but it's worth it.

 

Cheapest and easiest is reciprocal link building, but it isn't clear if Google values this anymore. I know of several sites that do just well doing this, but they were setup years ago.
