Just a quik question... When calculating PR does Google use the PR of links from link:www.mysite.com or "www.mysite.com"? I'm kinda confused. link:...still shows zero links, while "www.mysite.com" shows around 50.
while G is calculating pr , it does not use both of them. link operator shows your backlinks (not all of them) "www.mysite.com" shows the pages which includes "www.mysite.com"
Hello, PR and Link are very different things, as said trichnosis Link is an operator like site:www.yoursite dot com.. If you use link in Google, they will not show you 100% the backlinks, Google knows about all your backlinks but only display the most imporant and a couple of them, if you want to see all your backlinks try to use yahoo, MSN is not longer to show backlinks for now... My 2 cents, Jakomo
ok gotcha. thankz! So just because link:www.mysite.com shows zero links, Google does in fact know about my backlinks and is using them (well related ones) in calculating PR? And should i worry if google link: shows zero, but yahoo (for example) shows over 500?
Good question, I was wondering the same thing. I noticed that not even the free directories that i submitted to were showing up when I used link:.
How long ago did you submit? If it was only recently, you'll have to wait for Google to crawl the directory again. Even then, Google only shows a fraction of the backlinks your site has, but is aware of all of them. As has been mentioned previously, use Yahoo! when checking backlinks.
I submitted some of them months ago. If if use the link checker in google webmaster tools, it shows some of them. However, if I use the simple link: from within regular google search they don't show up. Here is one of them: allthewebsites.org/webdirectory/computing,37,6.html
Nobody ever believes me about this, but old codgers like me don't give up easily. So, here goes.... Google's link: operator has evolved over the years. Originally, back in the late 1990's, it actually did show all of the links Google knew about for the URL in question. Then in late 2002, when we were still in the era of the monthly "Google Dance", Google changed the link: operator to show only the higher-quality links - that is, links from pages with a PageRank score of roughly 4 or higher. In late 2005, a user over on Webmasterworld's Google forum pointed out to a Google employee (yes, GoogleGuy) that the link: operator could be used to find sources of high quality links - especially those of a site's competitors. Subsequently, Google changed the command so that while it still showed the *number* of high quality links, the pages that were shown were not exclusively made up of those high quality pages. It seems likely that the pages shown are essentially a top-down dump of Google's internal database of links for the URL in question, but this is why people refer to these results as being random, or a sample. The result is that you can still rely on the link: operator to show the number of high quality links Google has credited to a URL, but you can't know where all of those links originate. As Google tightens its requirements for how deeply or frequently it crawls a site, webmasters can't rely on the popular wisdom that Google knows *every* link that points to your site. Many links on obscure link pages or modestly ranked directories will not count in Google because those pages are no longer getting indexed.
No. Vanessa Fox has stated that not even the list of links in the Webmaster Tools console shows every link that Google knows about, although it is a much more comprehensive list than the link: operator shows.
rainborick is right In fact, there is no tools that can show you all the links Google indexes atm. Google Webmaster Tools do show a larger amount of samples but not all. Yahoo, on the other hand, lists down a comprehensive list for backlinks
Because some sites put in your URL that points to your site. If you want to build backlinks, put in the keyword in the anchor text then do it in hyperlinked form then wait for Google to index your backlinks
Trying to check Google backlinks to see if I have a Google penalty or something. Google webmaster tools shows the same 26 links it has for months. I find it suspicious that my Yahoo backlinks are nearing 1000, but Google shows zero. Then I hear of someone getting 30 links to show up in Google in five days. btw...good for him So, I guess there are a number of different Google updates. The ones that I'm interested in would be the PR update and the Backlink update. Am I correct in assuming that my backlinks won't show in Google by link:mysite until after next BL update? Or is possible (like the guy I mentioned) to have your new BLs show up between BL updates? Whew!
