I have not been able to connect to the site this morning. Anyone else?

Edit: Hmm, having some other strange issues here, maybe it is just me :p

I wonder why they don't have their forum on a seperate server so they can address these things as they happen.

Or do they (I don't know the url)

They posted in the news that the host is still running on generators and they lose power every few hours as they refuel or change the oil or do something like that.

they could always just get a decent host =P

I mean what kind of shop is this link vault? I have backup machines at 2 different datacenters (being Seatle and Dallas) and I dont consider my self a hosting professional.

When disaster strikers change dns record and your back up...

Especially because its been going on for so long. I was picturing a guy riding a stationary bicycle and every time they change riders, all the servers go down :D

I have been starting to have similar thoughts. I remember a while back someone asking me, "If your host just disappeared with your sites and data overnight, how long till you would be back up and what would you lose?"

I do my best to keep the answers to those questions: less time then the DNS propagation will take and nothing important. In reality that is not quite true, but it is not that far off either.

Edit: Ok LV is up now. Possibly it was just me, but I don't see how that could be. Anyway, time to diversify.

Edit Edit: "Power has now been up and steady for 2 days. The hosts are still running on generators so we are still anticipating short outages while they change oil and maintaing them. One of our servers experienced hardware problems in the storm and is still offline so we are not back to full capacity yet. Please bear with us while we repair what mother nature has dealt us."

    LV forums are down however.

I have seen DC's in florida run for 6 weeks on generators without issue. Shouldn't a good backup have a few thousand gallons of fuel and battery backups if there is a need to take down the generator for service.

This sounds like the host is in thier mom's basement and they are using a 5hp generator from walmart to keep the power up.

I love the idea of the service they offer, would pay for it in a minute if they can get links running timely. I am not just complaining about the recent hurricane downtime, I have more forgiveness for that.

There is however a group of users that stand up for the service to no end. I just dont get why people think you should always just bend over when you are on the customer side of things.

Change your TTL on your DNS records to like 5 minutes. Then when you need to switch your max downtime is 5 minutes from when you make the switch.
