I recently broke the $200 a day mark on adsense but was still a little concerned that my link units were in fact bringing me down because the value of a click on these was 20%-30% less than other units. Regardless of these click values the link unit was making up around a third of my income (i have two other placements so it was pretty even). I decided to experiment today and remove the link unit to try and encourage more clicks on the more valuable text ad units within the content and on the left hand side under the nav. Well it didn't work, the CTR on these text ad units did not change whatsoever and my income was far less. This experiment may have cost me $60 or so but at least I realise now that these link units can produce fantastic results without compromising the other ads' CTR. I have begun to implement them on all my other websites to see if the impact is as big. Btw, I placed my link units towards the top of the site just under the header image. Hope you found this useful.
I used to be a link unit hater, but WOW. I added some in the last two weeks--not even blended--and they have performed amazing. CTR on my AdSense for content didn't even get hurt, so it's just extra revenue.
The links units receive a lot of clicks. They are a very important part of your AdSense income. However sometimes they are paying less than a normal AdSense ad.
Congrats on reaching the $200 mark! Do you promote your websites a lot or just rely on content and SE's picking them up?
I simply chose a manageable niche which happens to have a lot of traffic but fewish competitors. Then I slowly built links to the site with various anchor texts (much of my traffic comes from 5 or 6 main keywords but i built links with 20-30 variations). It took me just over a year to reach this point and at first I was a little disconcerted when i saw my adsense going up very slowly but i kept at it.
Link units require very good blending. They do work, but only if your good at blending them, especially with a task/tool bar. Congrats, they are some impressive earnings, well done. I make about 20% of my revenue through link bars alone.
I tried link units a long time ago and they sucked.. after reading your post I decided to try them again.. so far after a few hours the CTR is pretty high, but the ePC is only a few cents.. I'll give them a go for a week or so ..
Link unit always makes me worry about fraud clicks...So I remove them this month it was like 60 clicks 1.24$
same here, i have link units just below the logo and they convert really well. i get more clicks on link units than on other ads.
How much would you say an average click is from your other ad placements? I see quite a difference in click values between link and ad units but nowhere near that bad....I guess that since you only earn revenue once someone has clicked on the link unit AND on one of the subsequent search results it depends greatly on the results that appear. I simply found that i did not have to sacrifice my other earnings to get these extra clicks so they were pretty much a bonus. But for a few cents a click it hardly seems worth it.
I have a link unit right by the search box at the very top of the page, it is performing very well for me.
I don't like link units, because of the lack of design control. However money wise link units do work quite well. So I do use them on my sites but purely because of the money they make me.
