Link Trading - Good, Bad or Useless

(This comes after reading the informative Top 10 Link Building Techniques from this forum)

I am managing the websites for a number of small businesses in a very specific area of town, in an historic district. Each site has a page with a brief description of the district, along with a few helpful links for tourists.

I was thinking of adding to that page a small section like "Here are some of our favorite places to shop" and then linking to the other sites I've done (as well as a few I have not).

Will this be helpful, hurtful, or non-effective (in regards to Google and PR)?

The article calls this dark-grey... but to me it seems like it is good information being provided to help visitors of the site plan their trip. The last thing I want to do is HURT these sites' PR.

Right now I've got varying PR's from 1 to 4. My initial though was a rising tide lifts all boats... but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Personally, I think this sounds like a good idea. I don't see why this would hurt your sites' PR- unless it was something in competition with your client (obviously).

Not sure how much it would really help for PR, but it shouldn't hurt. Sounds like it would be useful for the visitors, so I'd go ahead and add the links. Sometimes we get so concerned with how Google will react that it's easy to lose sight of the main reason for building the site - providing useful information to your visitors. Do that and the rest of it will take care of itself.

Only do it if your other sites are related to the original site. If they are all in different industries then I would avoid it. If Google decides that you own all the sites and are simply trying to game the SERPs then you'll end up getting a penalty.

I have several sites and some link to the others because they are closely related (i.e. new cars and car parts). Other sites don't link at all because they have nothing in common (web directory list and cars). So far it has worked well for me.

Hmm... Its familiar on having a "resource page" containing other of YOUR websites that is related to your website. The only thing that make it UNIQUE is your title in your page : "Here are some of our favorite places to shop". Nice dude! Do it! Im suire it wouldn't harm your website! ;)

Honestly, I don't think link exchanges really helps you out. If you do exchange links do it slowly and with relevant link partners. Make sure you keep track of who you exchange links with, where they put your link, and whether or not they're following Google's guidelines. You don't want to link to a bad neighborhood or exchange links with somebody who intends on removing your link when you're not looking.

Thanks for the tips! I think I'll go ahead and do it (its on a pretty small scale, and I'll probably just do it for sites I manage). I'll just watch what everyone's PR is, and see what happens!

    Dear rgkopchak,

It will either be helpful or non effective , I don't think it will be harmful for your sites PR.

You will benefit best when you get link exchanges with relevant partners and again you have to do it slowly so its looks natural.

    Regards

Why risk your sites with reciprocal linking, i would suggest buying reviews on quality high traffic relevant blogs. These blogs will bring more traffic to your site giving your upto 3 incoming links per review which would eventually help improve your SERPs. You could buy reviews and get links from PR6 blogs for very little money. Go try it www.buyblogreviews.com

I exchange links partly for PR and also do it for the traffic. I have a music website is which we exchanged links with a few large traffic websites and I probably get 500UV a day from those links.

I'd got with mildly effective but not worth it. Its better to just get 1 way inbound links
