Hi, Is it necessary to put a link to the google site map from any of the pages. Does it makes any difference if I put one in the index page
if its google site map(.xml format) and if you submitted it from services panel , you don't have to link.
You can however "point" from robots.txt to xml sitemap - this allows other search engines to automatically discover your XML sitemap.
I got a sitemap.php file processed through some site, it said I should download it, then upload it on my web-hosting. I put it in the same folder where index.html is, should I do anything more? Put a link on home-page to sitemap.php or the fact that it is placed in the same folder is fine?

adding all of your pages is better because you are giving information to google about pages. why dont you want to add some pages to your sitemap?
I personally think, you do not need to link to your Google sitemap. Linking to your regular sitemap should help to get more pages indexed from your site. Thanks Troy
If you have submitted the sitemap to Google using Webmaster Tools, then it will have no impact. I do create and submit a new sitemap weekly. It works for me.
