Think of a directory structure, it is divided in categories and sub categories. Most of the directories have human editors (whether paid or volunteers) to evaluate the site's quality and relevance. Editor will list only the quality website and that too if submitted to the proper directory.

An automated submission program can submit your website along with the details to directories but the structure of all directories is not unique and hence chances are there that the submission may go in inappropriate category. Moreover, the program may not able to judge the best and niche category for your website.

This may end up into an infinite process of submission through a program and may result into a ban on your website for spamming !

Though the automated submission may not be totally useless, the advice is to go for manual submission.

Manual submission will involve the activity of identifying correct directory, category and then input the correct Title, Description and keywords to each directory / search engine or website.

To make the manual submission process easy, consider entering the relevant information in a text file and then copy and paste the information from text file to the submission form.

Alternatively you could use form filling programs like Roboform or Mozilla Firefox plugins to fill up the forms automatically. You could get the similar utility developed in-house if the security is the concern.

    You are always welcome.

I have tracked by link request response approval rate.

Using Link Machine my acceptance rate was under 2%
Using Zeus my acceptance rate was under 1%

Using personalized letter individually tailored to the site where I requested a link link is over 100%. You say this is impossible - I target sites that are top quality, usually professionally prepared and maintained, tell the webmaster how great his site is. I do NOT tell him I have already posted a link - presumptus thinking - instead I ask him to reply if he is interested and offer to post a link if he exchanges links or refuses to link to me. Several have responded with 10 - 20 sites and asking me to post links to them.

    KEEP IT PERSONAL

yes thats a good idea to latitude if you actually email them personally im sure the acceptance is much greater. That would be a good thing to do if you had the time to do that.

You need to find the time. As I said, I have received 20+ links from one request. At that rate building a few hundred is not all that hard or time consuming. I am about to do the same on all of my sites.

Automation is NEVER going to work well. :) It is better to do 100 Manual submission than 500 Automated submission :)

Don't use automated submission to directories. You pay for someone who can do that to you or you can submit it by yourself.
About submission to search engine its not advisable to submit your site. Wait for them to crawl your site. Once you build links your site can be found by search engine spider.
