Link strategy: exclusively .gov and .edu links. Can this work?

Hey guys. I was thinking about embarking on my next website and I want to know whether it would be a viable tactic to buy an old domain, and look for only .gov and .edu links for domain authority so that I can get well positioned for longtail SERPS. Will this be a good strategy, or will Google want to see more link variation? Has anyone ever tried this before?

Well..it depends, how strong your competitors are.
There are many factors that are important for sherps. See this for details: http:// www. seomoz. org/article/search-ranking-factors
For getting authority it is a good idea..but don't forget the rest of factors! :D

Definitely well because .EDU and .GOV links are so important for a website coming out in SERPs to the first position.
They are still helpful to improve traffic.

Well, next question is, how do you get those .gov and .edu links? :p

    You need diversity

Edu and Gov links are not magical links ...

It is not easy to get some, unless the domain name is drop, because I can see any government or college selling link on there website.

Having links from .gov or .edu are good for site credibility.
    Link Variation
Well, if your competition is high then you need diversity to beat competition.

I do not feel it would work. You need to have all sorts of links, unless your site is concerned with Government and Education field only.

Check Fiverr for a guy that's sold 5000+ .edu/.gov link packages... Can't hurt for $5 right? I have always had a lot of success with .edu/.gov links when getting new sites indexed and ranked on the first page, or even position 1. I read somewhere awhile ago that 1 "good" .edu backlink is worth 100+ "regular" .com backlinks. I like them because I can point a few at a new site and become an authority in Google's eyes, without getting sandboxed for loading 10k links on a month old domain

Just don't get too carried away with them. Overstock got zapped for getting colleges to give them to them for discounts on products. They were probably doing it on a massive scale though.

Edu and Gov links are good if site has authority but just cause of EDU and Gov doesnt mean they are high authority sites

Link variation is always best, but .gov and .edu links are very helpful.

It's probably going to trigger some flag if you have only .gov/.edu backlinks. Like so many other users stated, variation is extremely important.
