Link sabotage?

Is it possible to hurt a sites ranking for a KW by building large numbers of links to thatr site from craapy sources like low quality autoblogs and so forth?

I know there's some debate about this, but I'm starting to think it may be possible.

what about traffic and bounce rate? if you flooded a site with low quality spam traffic that all bounced, could that affect the ranking of the site?

If so, then how can a webmaster protect themselves against such attacks?

Yes it does exist and there is slim to nothing you can do about it.

That can get ugly, I hope I don't get on anyone's bad list and have them do this to my website...Interesting though.

Sure, but lets not forget that you can be sued for that as well if it gets linked to you.

Why don't you buy some great content for your site and build some backlinks for yours?

Sending crappy traffic won't affect the site to much .... you might give the competition some free conversions :D
Best case scenario for building a bunch of links is that will send the competition in the sandbox for a while... but after that it will come back more stronger!
    and then what? ...

Personally I always do focus on building my sites up, not tearing others down, but it just makes me laugh (or cry) a little inside to think that for all the work that goes into building up a good site and organic rankings, it might be a lot easier to just punish your competitions.

and for anyone who thinks that being sandboxed is just an annoyance - I beg to differ. Getting sandboxed for a few months for important terms can undo literally months of hard legitimate SEO work.

I can just see it now, "SEO Saboteur for hire" setting up false accounts and trying to knife or negatively influence in some way other sites for a fraction of the price and time it takes to build yourself up.

Think about it - if you're at #2 for a competitive high value term, it could take you a long time and huge amounts of wrk to try for that #1 spot which is worth doble the amount of traffic you can get from search. either that or you could get someone to try and take down your competitor. even if they only drop a couple of places that's all you really care about anyway, even better if they get sandboxed and drop completely for a while.

    what a really sickening thought.

i think there is a limitation of building is there for site of a month. if you build more.no.of links for that particular keywords, it may affect your site.
