Link relevancy

I am a neophyte so please forgive the nievete of my questions.

Recently I hired an SEO expert to do some work to my photography site. After she added real estate links to my home page and a seperate links page, among other things, I lossed 57% of my traffic.

The general consensus is that I need to scrap the home page links because the are irrelevant to say the least.

My links got placed after I added relevant text, alt tags, title, etc., and shortly before the last time Google revised rankings. Do not know what that is called. Also, most of the alt tags from reciprocal real estate sites state my most important key phrase-- los angeles photographer.

I am not an architectural photographer but the SEO suggested I put up a page that would be plausible location for real estate links. The rationale was so I could get more high ranking links.

My question is, after I eliminate the irrelavant home page reciprocal links, will the remaining real estate reciprocal links on separate links page do me any good.

Based on what I have read about the new Google algorythm my suspicion is that they will do more harm than good since the links were part of a sudden spawning of an irrelavant link cluster and not part of my historical link relationships.

Since I have had no success with SEO experts, and am of limited means I am learning to manage my own photography website www.carreonphotography.com and would appreciate any enlightenment on this issue.

    Any thoughts would be welcomed.
