What should be the strategy for developing links for a new website? I am not talking about what kind of links to be built, i am talking about no of links. Say No of links in 1st 3 months, next 3 months and in a year...so that u acquire links as well and google donnt count you as spam...
The target will vastly depend on the market. In a niche market you wouldn't need or want to pick up as many links quicky as if you were targeting mortgages for example.
Nobody will be able to give you any definate answer that is reliable. Look at the competing sites, see how many links thaey have, 100 or 100,000? Spread your anchor text, use different phrases and get links from quality related sites and you should be okay.
I would try to keep your link acquisition at a steady rate. If the search engines see you've been getting 1-2 links a week, and then all of a sudden 100 links appear overnight, then that may raise a flag. In terms of absolute numbers, i.e., how many links do you need to beat your competitors, then you need to look at what they are doing. How many links do they have? What kind of sites are the links coming from? Are they run of site, coming from a home page, or from reciprocal link pages, etc. Aim to outdo them.
So even if u go for link building on a mass scale it should be a continous process. suppose i build 100 links in 3 months for a new site. next 3 months i stay quite and in next 6 months i get 500 links....in any case is it spam accoding to google...
