Both are important, but I'd still place links a step higher.

in my personal view, content is more important. because if your site is useful, informative then you will get clicks more once your vistors visit your pages

I'm going to have to add one more vote for content.

If a site has good content that my visitors would find helpful, I'll link to it in a heartbeat. If however, the site is only looking for a link, and has nothing to offer my customers...not a chance.

From my recent experiments, I definitely have found inbound relevant links to be my most beneficial SEO strategy

Lately, I have been using the 'Conduit Method' (which entails using very little content) and after building up some relevant links with linkvana, I have managed to get every single one of my 'conduit pages' to the 1st page of Google, Yahoo and Bing for my targeted keywords :)

    Cheers

I think I will have to put in a vote for the zoroastrianist dualism of mutual coexistence.

Without one, the other would not only be ineffective, but quite possibly not exist all together.

Putting equal efforts into on & off page SEO will yield the most fruitful results.

Well, I'd have to agree with everybody above that links and content go together. Theoretically, they are equally important, but...

In the real world, the vast majority of webmasters don't spend anywhere near enough time on links. I was in this group myself, for years, until not so long ago.

The real world challenge for most webmasters is to shift some focus from content to links. Instead of 95% content / 5% links, more like 50/50.

Of course, readers of this link forum probably don't need this advice, but most webmasters need it pretty bad, imho.

Links are far more important than links. There is a general saying that if you provide good content then links will come but still, links are better. If you have crappy content, but good links to it, you will still rank high.

    Hi James,

This is some thing which is often raised up for discussions.
Its not the SEO services which popularizes the sites in Search engines but also its content. They both go hand in hand. I mean SEO services are fruitful only if the site has some good content.

    regards
    Sripat

It is obvious that Content! rates higher than links :)
