Link Juice: The Nofollow Rules

Throughout the past three years, the rules regarding nofollow attributes have changed through the eyes of Google. Let’s take a look at the best practices now as compared to prior to these changes. But first here is, in brief, the concept of PageRank sculpting.

The idea of PageRank sculpting is that you can control the flow of your link juice on your website by using the nofollow attribute. For example: if you have four links on a page and one of those links has a nofollow tag then the remaining three links are the only links that will pass a percentage of the PageRank of the current page to the pages they are linking to.

Here is where the biggest change has taken place. Prior to the summer of 2009, the three links that were passing link juice would have each passed 33% of the PageRank. Over the summer of 2009, Google announced that nofollow links will continue to not pass link juice, however, their percentage of PageRank will be discarded and not shared with the remaining links on the page. So going back to our example, the remaining three links will now each pass 25% of the PageRank and the remaining 25% will be lost. article

    Hi
probably most of the people don't even know what you are talking about. No answers! I wrote about new features of webmaster tools(ranking,CTR) and got only one really interested guy! When somebody writes about submitting to search engines , you will get on the contrary lots of answers - LOL. Actually it is sad but keep writing!

Because of nofollow tag many are obsessed just getting the dofollow links. What's wrong with nofollow link? As long as it's authority link I go for it. :D

What is wrong ? No juice, no authority. Their "only" value is traffic. So if it will generate traffic, it may be very valuable.

I just try and keep the outbound links down and I don't bother with nofollow tags. The only outbound links I do have will be referral links and links i have to have on my site due to th OS software I'm using such as WordPress.

I think that if a site is structured the right way then the Page Rank will take care of itself--e.g., higher numbers of links from pages close to the root directory will tend to cause PR to flow in a particular direction.

This is pretty old news. There was a recent post on SEOmoz or some other SEO blog that PR sculpting still showed some results.

That'll really suck for all those blogs using nofollow. And forums as well and anything else that allows user links. Might as well just prohibit linking to outside websites in blog comments. That'll probably be some people's reasoning. A shame too because referencing outside websites can be fun and informative.
