I have just used two sites that link to google without 'nofollow' tag.
    http://www.unit-conversion.info/links.html

How unit-conversion.info site related to google?. Why is not google being penalized for this?

    http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Mathematics/
Look at the bottom of this page. Why is even this site linking to google and that without nofollow tag and at the very bottom of the page where no one can even go and click?

Shouldn't google be penalized for this?
Is google buying links from these sites?

Because google makes the rules. They did penalize thier own blog once and took it off results when they set up spam filter for blogs. Of course they fixed that for thier own site to be allowed.

They aren't being penalized because they weren't depending on those links in the first place.

I saw that their search is offered by google, but the link to google is out of place at the bottom. The search box is at the top.

How do you know for a fact that they are not dependent on those links?

If the only way websites link to google is via search box, adsense etc, then they should have 'no follow' tag. If thats the case the page rank of google should be far below 10.

    I don't get it.

I think we can come up with a blog post on how google is creating exceptions for its own sites and penalizing other sites for the same offence.

Page rank algorithm is good but not without flaws and their over dependenance on it is their shortsightedness.

if this was a penalization then your competitor can easily penalize your website within a few days buying links for you on unrelated websites. :)
Penalization is done to the site that is giving link.. not to the site that is receiving.

No the reason is Google has enough of a link profile, who's to say Google's algo hasn't devalued those links and they hold no benefit?

Yahoo, Apple, Adobe, MSN etc all have links such as this also. Actually i'd say almost 100% of popular sites have unrelated links. The problems occurs when a site's link profile consists primarily of unrelated, or links sharing a paid link characteristic.

I do see your point though.

You are right and i agree with you.

    Based on what you said.....
Among 10 outgoing links, if i have one for gambling site should google penalize and stop trusting my site?

From all the discussions on this topic, what i get is...
If you like a site and if it is related to what your site is offereing, then go ahead and link to it with/without nofollow tag.

If you are selling links/advrts and if they are related/unrelated use a nofollow tag.

    Is that a fair conclusion?
    Thanks
