I'm thinking of buying links and i found some good deal in buy-sell section. But my concern is those website are not related to mine. I like to know, is it ok to have links from website with different theme and content? Will it do any good for my SERP?

you will be better off getting related links. however, if you get links that are not related, if it doesn't do you any good, it not gonna do you any bad atleast.

I don't think it will count much for your Google ranking.links coming from relevant sites are considered mire value.

The entire website subject matter does not need to be exactly the same as yours. If a website has a particular page that is similar in subject matter and the link is on this page or in the subject matter that is being discussed, that is ok.

Good question..and just to add on,
how related should the sites be?

For example if your site is on laptops
is buying links on hard disk okay?

I hope im not hijacking your thread ;)

It will NOT harm your SERP. it might not do you any good, but it will not harm. Google realizes that its not always possible to control who links to your site. If unrelated links would harm SERP, than competitors would have a great tool to effect other competitor's SERP by linking form unrelated sites.

No worries... whether they affect your SERP or not but if the linking sites have heavy traffic then you will get good traffic.

Such a link can do plenty of good. Search engines aren't the final arbitrators of what is and isn't related. And they recognize far more connections than people around here seem to give them credit for. Finance, politics, and economics are all somewhat related, even if the subject matter isn't identical, for example.

If someone offered me a link on the google homepage i would certainly take it, even though its not relevant to my sector.

Google doesn't care about the subject matter of the sites pointing to you at all. It will pass pagerank according to an nonjudgmental algo. You are more likely to receive human TRAFFIC from a related site, but from a direct link PR standpoint, grab the link.

If an unrelated link would hurt a site, there would be quite a few people buying links to knock out their competitors.

IMO Links on unrleated sites are fine, but don't expect to get any traffic from them. Which brings me to this point... If your budget is minimal, then seek links from related sites so you at least stand a chance of getting some traffic.

It depends on the site and how many current links you have.

For example if you have 100 links pointing to the website and 10 of them are related and 90 are not.

The search engines may base the relevance of your site to the links and not the content.

If you are going to pay for the link make sure it is relevant else you are better of spending it on PPC.

Read carefuly what he ask...He said think of buying links but the link is not related to his (meaning he plans to buy link)...

Do you know how to read a question? I know that Google realizes that does who links to you...Before you make some criticism read and understand first okay.

Read below what he ask and understand....

Surely part of the point of links is to offer services and access to sites for your visitors of content that is not in direct competition with your offering and compliments your website.

Relevancy is perceptual, you can buy a car tyre , television or other white goods from the super market and get your keys cut from a heel bar.

Relevant to who, judged by whom, from which perspective.

If you follow what Google says, "buy links only for traffic purposes", then you should be able to judge how beneficial a link buy will be to your PR and trust also. Google is continually trying to improve the artificial intelligence of their algorithm to mimic an average surfer's behavior. So even if a link doesnt directly benefit you today, but it brings in the traffic which is relevant for your website, Google will eventually recognize this link is a trustworthy inbound link.
