Hi, If site xyz.com uses link farms & is penalized & also links to my site, what happens? I presume that their link to me will be worthless... But their link to me will not have a bad effect on my site, will it?
I hear this all the time, but what exactly will happen if you link to a "bad site"? And what exactly is a "bad site"?
no one ever seems to know do they I have been doing seo for like 3 years and I have yet to see someone show a specific example of a "bad neighborhood" there was like one thread somewhere where google guy says that this site with css hiding the text was bad, but it had pr and lots of pages what if someone doesn't know css? how do they tell?
My understanding is that you don't want to link to a site that either is banned or might be banned from the SE's.
I have sites that are banned by the search engines, I don't think the people who linked to them where hurt I know I am probably linking to a buch of banned sites somewhere
Well, let's dispel this rumor...I have a site wide link to a banned site and nothing negative has happened to my site. I know, and it drives me crazy that people will believe and repeat it with out really knowing what the hell a "bad site" is...haha
You won't get penalized by Google for incoming links but I'm pretty sure there are effects to your keywords positions on the search engines if you have so many links coming in to your site with the same anchor text. It is definitely a bad idea to link to a link farm.
This is am finding to be very true. Over optimizing on anchor can led to some bad effects over the long haul.
Ok...IMHO bad neighborhoods are Sex sites when not related, sites that spam everywhere and anywhere, like gambling sites, MLM sites, affiliate sites like long distance and ring tone sites are the ones to be weary of. Not all of them have bad spamming practices but those industries are know as some of the worst and you should be carefull when trading links with them. I'm sure ther are others but thats a start.
Wow!! Nice rant! lol But I do agree with you and I would never link on purpose to one of these sites. I think one or two may have slipped through to a few of my sites when doing bulk link exchanges but I generally try to avoid these types of sites. The main reason is that I dont want my business being associated with non family friendly sites.
Isn't this whole bad neighbourhood thing something that PR is actually useful for? While I might link to a white bar, I would not link to a gray bar.
I'm going to have to disagree. I'm assuming that we are talking about "bad neighborhoods" as in sites that are deindexed/dropped out of Google. If you have a legit site, you can link to, and receive links from, any site. And, I will believe that until someone can show me an actual example proving otherwise.
