Link exchange with competitor, good or bad idea?

    Hi.

    What do you think?
If I do a link exchange with a "competitor", and the competitor is authority site in google for one or more keywords that are also relevant for my site, and my site is, lets say in top 10 at google for these keywords...

... who will benefit more of this link exchange?
    The competitor, or me?

    Thanks

I can't see why the competitor will exchange links with your site if it's ranking lower.

Not sure, maybe to get another link from relevant quality site, and to get traffic from me?

It will benefit you more because they are ranked higher, thus you technically should average one another out.

i was thinking the same. no competitor will exchange links with a site that ranks just a little lower then them. but there are all kinda people in the world, so who knows?

if you can exchange links with that competitor, by all means GO AHEAD

The competitor asked me for exchange. :D
Since he's #1, he should know what he's doing.
I'll go and ask him for details.

    Thanks for your replies.

you'd better not do so, you can find your competitor's back link, and try to exchange links with them.

Link Exchange usually benefit both sites, though there has been SEO talks that link exchanges are not good anymore... But Link exchange with relevant sites are still good and it works for me, if not overdone..

But I would say that your competitor will be benefited more than it benefits you.
    Here is why...

If he gave you any rank JUICE, you are also going to give him Ranking Juice..
He is already ranked better... So you will give him some point, and so will he..
Both of you rise in rank.. While you as a competitor should TRY to outrank him.

I don't know if you are getting me...
By linking to him you are making him stronger...

Never exchange with direct competitors for "a keyword"..
You will find enough sites in your niche where you don't have to compete for the same keyword..

Try to offer a deal.. Say there are 20 popular keywords, you should deal with a competitor in such a way that you help him rank for keyword-1, and he help you rank for keyword-2
