Link Exchange Tools - Good or Bad?

Just wondering if link building/exchange tools like http://www.phpjunkyard.com/php-link-manager.php are any good for your site? It makes link exchanges very easy but I have had a couple of people say that search engines penalize sites using these scripts

The main thing I need to know does it effect your site having it on your site?
Plus I would also like to know if my links are on someone elses site that is using this tool does it effect my site?

 

Sounds like a fast track to being penalised to me. In my opinion link exchanges are a waste of time, unless you're just picking a few high quality sites within your niche. With an automated tool I imagine you'll quickly find yourself linking to a bad neighborhood of sites, and in return you'll have a bad neighborhood of site linking to you. When this happens you risk being penalised/banned by google, and as the links were setup automatically if you want to submit a re-inclusion request you'll have the difficult task of first finding out what links were setup and then manually trying to find contact details of the webmasters to get them removed!

Reciprocal linking is pretty much dead anyway. I think you'll end up doing your site far more harm than good with this - probably end up linking to bad neighbourhoods and viagra sites and the like with no benefit to you at all.

I would stick to the tradition link building techniques. Also I can never say this to many times, but always make sure you have good quality content on the site you are link building for. It makes everything much, much easier.
