I have been doing link exchange work for a long time and I think it works. But the important point is that you must treat links with quality site.

Link exchange works in seo & traffic but exchange links may be down your rank so you should keep One way links to your website.

I actually think you are better off just posting links with your signature on different forums. Most sites are not even close to what DigitalPoint and other major forums ranking's are. I think link exchange's are just a waste of time.

    Hi ,
I dont look at it like link exchange.. I do the following and have built up some great partnerships and friends.. Its all about long term.

Find site and review , come up with good and bad.
Contact webmaster and introduce - Mention good and bad.. ( bad in positive spin!)
Mention that you're interested in a partnership including link exchange , guest posting , cross site competition , feed display or news aggregation..
    Start with Link Exchange
    Keep in touch via IM..

    Rinse and Repeat :)
