Link exchange SEO is nice, but audience size is better

I've spent a lot of time doing link exchanges and article marketing, and what I have discovered is that some links have great benefit to the SEO of my sites and others have no benefit at all. Here are a few other lessons I've learned:

    1. In the beginning, look for a wider variety of targeted keywords.

    2. After your link exchange and article marketing campaign is well under way, check the results in Google search and especially in Webmaster Central.

    3. The keywords that rise the most probably have less competition. Now narrow your efforts to just a few of them and forget the rest.

    4. Check variations on those keywords. You may find that your pet keyword phrase "the sky is blue" doesn't move much but "why the sky is blue" has really popped. The second version may have fewer searches, but getting 300 clicks on 1,000 searches is better than getting 10 clicks on 10,000.

    5. Don't look at just the PR of the site where you are getting the link. Look at its audience size as well. I get a lot more traffic because of a site with PR2 and 10,000 visits a month than a site with PR3 and 500 visits a month.

I've seen a lot of sites with high PR and low traffic. A high PR is great for the ego, but bad for the wallet if it doesn't produce any audience. In other words, audience matters just as much if not more than PR.

I would air on the side of caution for link exchanges, a lot of work goes into these and it is easy for the major search engines to pick up reciprocal links. This used to be a valid link building technique, but I would recommend you focus more upon creating one way back links which will be much more beneficial for improving your SERP's.

Thanks for sharing the insights , I agree with you . Though Webmaster TOS advice against reciprocal link exchanges no one can deny the fact that it actually works and when done with thematic sites it will not only get link juice but also targeted traffic within the network of the related sites .

I work with a lot of Web sites produced by other companies, and I rarely see one-way link exchanges anymore that are any use for building SEO or audience. Too many Web people seem to resist linking offsite. But I'm sure there are exceptions.

    This sentence in Google's TOS:

"The best way to get other sites to create relevant links to yours is to create unique, relevant content that can quickly gain popularity in the Internet community."

Made sense 10 years ago, but there is very little in the way of unique content on the Web today. There are simply too many Web sites providing a lot of the same information.

Yes, you don't want to do reciprocal link exchanges that are "schemes," "excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging" or purchased. But link exchanges and article marketing that provide relevance, quality and transparency (Google's words) seem to be accepted by Google.

    Has anyone discovered anything differently?

Yes I agree with that , infact it helps to ignore the TOS for sometime like for 6 or 8 direct link exchanges with a blog of similar niche will help in keeping the sites relevant and also regulate the flow of traffic within the network . I am not talking in terms of the search engines or the TOS . I am just talking in terms of common sense . Google has a way of bending things with their whims and fancies and if the webmaster has to think for a thousand times before putting a relevant link on his own site then maybe it is time to think who the site really belongs to ? The owner or Google ?

PS : No use making fuss with the TOS so much that you have to think before doing something on your site that helps you . It is a different story when you are doing it only to manipulate the rankings . That is when TOS comes in place .

Techlunatic, you're right about Google, I feel the same way. You have to do what's right for your site first and worry about Google second. Otherwise, like you say, the site belongs to Google. If they want to own it, they need to pay me a salary. :)
