Link Exchange ....do they really work?

    Hello everyone,

I have a question for all. I'm already in the process of exchanging links with other websites. I was told that link exchanges will eventually help improve you page rank. I know i've posted the question on the message boards before, but the reason i'm posting it again is because i just finished swapping links with this website that has over 30 pages of links, but has a page rank of only 2. Could someone explain how link exchanges help improve one's page? How long does it normaly take for one's website to change in terms of page rank? And once you get a page rank, could it go down? For example, if you have a page rank of 2 and you stop marketing, could you drop to a 0 or a 1? If someone could fill me in, it really would be appreciated.

My blog is PR4 just because a number of other bloggers have linked to it, so yes, link exchange works.

At a guess, the 30 pages of links website is probably getting penalised for being nothing more than a link farm (also if all the sites linking to it are 0 or sandboxed, that doesn't make for great PR).

Page rank can and does go down (you'll know when google updates it because all the webmasters will start dancing for joy or screaming in frustration). But if your links are still there, most of your PR should be.

    Hi Sari,

You shouldnt worry so much about "toolbar pagerank" (aka TBPR), and work on gaining inbound links that make sense from a visitor perspective. As a visitor yourself, how often do you visit links pages on the websites you look at?

The best practice is to try to exchange links on internal pages of your sites. Content pages are good. For example if you have a website about gardening, you can link to a site on "roses" from your roses page. Not only are you adding value for your visitors (by offering them related resources), but you will also be building your Link Reputation & Link Popularity at the same time.

These types of links take longer to gather & post, but the benefits are greater and so it is worth it.

I agree. I managed to get sitewide link exchanges A-B-C linked and noticed a BIG increase on my daily traffic. Also my PR improved but this is not the main reason I am building my website. PR is just an extra!

I find that relevant links both help in PR and in customer viewing satisfaction. Relevant links to different interior pages have help quite a bit.
