Link droping in forums

    Hi Guys,

What are your thoughts on link droping in forums? Generally I don't do it but I wrote a post on a forum the other day, asking for some feedback about domain spam and I got totally flammed?

When I last used forums (2 years ago now) it was perfectly acceptable to drop a link, as long as it was in context and not for link stacking i.e. viagra tablets, you know the sort of thing.

    Ta,

    Allan

They probably thought you were spamming the forum because a lot of people actually do that now. I think there's even a software created to spam forums so be careful in dropping links.

So many people do that.. mods hate because everyday they have to clean that type stuff up.

It is grey area what is appropriate and what is spam when you just join a forum run through and drop a link it is spam.. if you are an established member and have contributed to the forum most mods and admins feel you have earned the right to put a few links here and there. But if they let anyone just go though and drop links the entire forum turns to Spam and dies.. literally,,I have seen it happen.

One of the major problems with DP IMO is link spam, a large percentage of the threads and comments on here are just garbage with a backlink stuck in them.

you can still drop your link.. especially here in DP... just make sure you dont make the post just for linkdropping, but for some information on your question.

    Hi Allan,

If you appear on a forum as a one-post-wonder just to "drop a link" your post will be considered as spam in many places. A lot of people spend far too much energy looking for shortcuts which are usually a waste of time. All you have to do on any forum is respect the rules, contribute positively, post your links in your signature file and once you have gained a good reputation on a forum, then occasionally "drop links" when they are helpful to the thread topic.

Totally agree with David , when you sign up for any of the forum , you should not explicitly put the links on any of the replying thread as it is considered as spamming .The best way to keep patience till the time you are not allowed to get a signature.

try to post with content and better if it is related to your site. adding a signature also helps.

It's acceptable to drop a link if you do it discreetly and it's related to the topic of discussion.

There's a difference between, "I just posted about xyz on my blog riiiight here >>> link" and "I was just thinking about xyz [xyz is hyperlinked to your post] and I wanted to know what you guys thought about it. [Then go into a basic outline about xyz.]"

It depends on the forum. You have to be realy good at it and oretend to be helpful while concealing any evidence that the link is related to you in any way. I really hate forums and only use them for traffic and to stuff my pockets anyway. I'm only going to use the ones that I can get over on and tear money away from the members.

he fact is that 75% of all forum users are no-life having assholes, but of course if it benefits me I'll post in them just to get traffic, signups, and sales. As far as helping people, I could care less, I'm only out to make money. Screw the asshole custies.

Great Post! You got to love how the spammers have ruined for the ones who want to offer value and solutions and place the link that can contribute to the issues.

its forum dependent, some do in a larger, less targeted manner.
if you are posting links relevant to the forum, i dont see any problem

note that some forums disable profile links altogether

I dont think its worth the hassle long term. registering and then posting just from a link. Or do you mean as a long term member and then dropping in links?
again i dont think its worth the risk.
If you have to do it then always use a buffer site.

Obviously if it on topic and you have good standing then its okay

I'm the same way. I don't see anything wrong with legitimate linkdropping; however, we already have the URL in our profile anyway which creates a valid link.

why drop link when you can place it in your signature? placing links to support your statement is acceptable but dropping for the sake of other things will be another story

The rules for forums are different. Before you go drop a link in a forum make sure to read up on the rules. If you are just joining a forum to post one post with a link, don't waste your time. Almost all the time they will get deleted.

I've never really had a problem with dropping links in forums. But it's wise to be active in the forums before you do. Get up to about 10 posts or so, help people out, etc. Then you can OCCASIONALLY drop a link. Best bet is to just add it to your signature if possible.

I did this once, and it will be the last time. Profile linking is so untargetted that my link was dropped in food forums...

and I just realized, people are signing up to my forum and doing nothing, now I know why.

    Forum owners call it spam

Spammers call it Promotion and Marketing

So I am cutting the profile off on my own forum until members have x amount of posts,
because I feel if you are not going to contribute to the forum to earn that backlink,
then why should I give you a free backlink because you think you deserve it? Why
would I want you to climb my back so you can climb the link ladder??!!

If you are a forum owner, and you do not want to put up with link drop-in's
then take action to limit what users can do within their profile until x number of posts....
You are not climbing the ladder, the spammer is using your forum so he can climb the ladder.
