I would agree that link farms are bad, but you do need some alternatives to search engines for information repositories. So it's a bit of a catch 22 situation.
I disagree with the writer of that article on many counts but, the need for content on any site is true. IMHO, this is why even directories need to expand the text for each link description to provide meaningful content while limiting spam keywords/phrases. Not the easiest task to do, I realize.
That was a very biased, ignorant article in my opinion. Ignorant in the fact that it's presented as a fact when in reality it's just someone's opinion. I agree with the author's "opinion", but I think directories will always have a place so long as Google and other search engines use link popularity as part of their algorithym.
Very good article on directories and the fact they are played out. Check it out> http://www.seochat.com/c/a/Google-Optimization-Help/Link-Directory-Genocide/
Well, typically google is a focal point for a lot of SEO's. But lets be honest, there is a lot of traffic out there that comes from MSN and Yahoo as well, to name a few. Does that mean we should just jump ship with directories? I wouldn't think so. I would say boo to this argument, I see no factual evidence of directories dieing out, nor their reason for existing. I suppose it's not a terribly bad written article, once you get past all the flashing freakin advertisements. But as noted previously, it's an opinion, nothing more.
A fairly well written article but it didn't say anything that we haven't been hearing for over a year. Yes, directories, especially general directories are not that useful to do a search with. That's obvious. The author doesn't give any alternatives on how to get hundreds of inexpensive links in a short period of time. She also never mentioned that directory listings are still providing a very positive effect on Search Engine Rankings.
Good point, William. I'll post over there. A fairly well written article but it didn't say anything that we haven't been hearing for over a year. Yes, directories, especially general directories are not that useful to do a search with. That's obvious. Links from directories worth today, but question is : Are they going to give some weight tomorrow ? I think they will give some weight until directories will not be seen like link farms.
She's predicting the death of directories in the first part of her article, then stressing the need for one site to link to another at the end? directories with just a mass of links I think we all know are dead allready, but what about niche directories, article directories? plenty more life in directories yet I think.
