Link directory for improving rankings

I have been reviewing a number of scripts that create a link directory. This seems a great way to create unique content for your site, so perhaps getting some hits from Google. Would I be correct in thinking that?

Also, do you think many people would search for these types of sites and exchange links with you and thus improve your rankings?

Would Google view this as reciprocal link exchange and not credit you with the link?

Sorry if these are a bit basic but I've been brought up as a PPC specialist!

    Thanks,

    Jon

Excessive reciprocal linking can get you penalized and put in the supplemental index in Google since the Big Daddy update. Some reciprocal linking between relevant sites is good but I don't think it will help with rankings much. One way links (backlinks) are the best way to improve your rankings. Also, be careful who you are linking to. Linking to spammy sites can get you in trouble also.

Is there a good way to determine if a site is spammy?
