This backs up my rule that content is king but you need to tell people about the content so they link to the content to make it all work.

If you have a rubbish site you can never build good links to it.

Yes everyone would love to build traffic, but it does not come just by building quality pages. You need to build traffic by building links. Most people do not have the brand of an MSN, Yahoo to generate automatic traffic, so link building is the only option they have in order to build the initial traffic.

Guys...Keep building your content. Getting links is accomplished my submitting articles. The results for me have been insane anyways. I am writing an article right now on my success gathering backlinks through article submission on profitpapers. See my sig.

So some research and you will see there really is only a few article sites you need submit to as well. Some of the article submission tools are steller as well. I also review what imo is the best one.

Excellent post and probably a wake up for alot of users. I have many sites that I havent touched in almost 1 year now, yet they still continue to rank extremely well for very competitive terms.

    How you say?

Through developing some excellent content first up which has promoted continual growth of people wanting to link to my site.

Actually, if you can generate traffic, you should get better rankings provided you have a quality site. I think web marketing can be summed up in 2 steps:
    1. Make a quality content site (quality)
    2. Expose the site to as many interested people, esp. the ones who have relevant sites (traffic generation).

The end result is, a lot of the people from #2, will link to you (link generation). When your site gets established, all you need to do is put more and more quality content, and your existing traffic/rankings will link even more to you. You will need to do less of #2.

Yes, once you become a bit of an authority site then people will link to your content without asking. The whole thing can mushroom.

Personally I found that writing articles is the best way to build links. If you use a site like articlemarketer.com you will receive links just for all the sites that will have your article so other webmasters can use them.
