Admins, please move the post if this is not the right category, I think this category is best suited for this question.

So I have learnt that we should submit to various directories for developing links. In return we can link to their homepage. My question is:

Would it help more if I also provide a link [on my website] to the place where "the directory" has placed my website's listing? That way when google crawls my website, it will also know to look at that place where I have a back link.
    Is that good or bad?

    Please advice.

    Thanks

I would say to submit your site to free directories which does not require reciprocal links

and also if you want reciprocal links do not place the links of your directories on your page add it some where else

    like www.domain.com/links.php

There are lot of php scripts available for it you can use any thing

I am not aware of the directories which do not want reciprocal link. Some of them say they dont want it, but when I submitted they rejected the entry with one reason or other.

Could you tell me some directories which do not want reciprocal links?

Most directories offer an option wether to link back or not.

    I wouldn't link to them

How many links like this is too many? Like if I did add a "links" page to my site, is there a number of links that it starts to look bad to a search bot?

I think you can have a maximum of 100 outgoing links for any page acccording to Google but

    I would recommend a maximum of 35-45

Only exchange links with related website, and make it naturally.

you may want to try Directory Critic...lots of directories listed and each have an option if you want it to be free or with reciprocal link...:)

As candid kris points out, there are hundreds of free directories that do NOT require a link back. And I would not put any links to them on your site. They will get spidered if the directory has been around and has a decent PR.
